The principals of Taekwondo techniques are based on the design of your body. For power you develop the larger, powerful muscles of the torso. The speed of the techniques comes from the fast, agile muscles of the arms and legs. As you progress in Taekwondo you will learn to coordinate this speed and power, and develop a concentration to focus all of your body's strength into a small, hard striking surface like the edge of the hand or the heel of the foot.
When the speed and power developed through Taekwondo is used in a self-defense situation against the soft vulnerable parts of an attacker's body, the result can be incredible. Taekwondo allows a woman to emphasize many of her natural physicals strengths, such as power in the legs while learning a method of self-defense efficient against a much larger opponent. Knowing you can defend yourself, your confidence will grow. And confidence alone is usually enough to deter potential attackers.
This does not come naturally for many people, but self-confidence can be developed over a period of time. Through Taekwondo, as you accomplish new goals, your confidence level increases. Taekwondo instills a sense of discipline and self-confidence that can carry over to all aspects of your life.
North Burnaby residents have been training with us for over 20 years. In that time we've fostered the trust of the community and have had a direct impact on the success of our students - many of which have gone on to great things and some still train with us! As a traditional martial art we are aware of the "blind spots" that martial arts might have within the scope of their training concepts. It's for that reason that our Taekwondo program incorporates elements of BJJ, Judo and Kickboxing. The result is a highly engaging and ever evolving program that provides an excellent framework for learning self-defence.
WHY Taekwondo?
As a martial art, if you think in terms of applied distance, Taekwondo is your first line of defence in an unarmed situation. Taekwondo also plays really well in combination with other martial arts and is the chameleon of the martial arts world. What most people don't realize is that most of the stars in the UFC have a background or at the very least Taekwondo training. Combine Taekwondo with BJJ (your last line of defence) and you have a formidable knowledge base to handle yourself in most self-defence scenarios.
Our Lil Ninjas program is for ages 4 - 7 years old. The focus of this program is to give a positive outlet for all that energy and give them a base for future martial arts excellence. We have an award winning curriculum that gives the "little ones" a spring board for success.
Our junior classes are for ages between 8 and 12 years old. These students differ from the little ninjas in the sense that they are exposed to the full curriculum and are expected to perform at a much higher level. The emphasis in this class is on discipline, technique and physical fitness.
In this class, green belt and above, are introduced to sparring drills, boxing drills, nunchaku training, single stick forms and more elaborate self-defense techniques.

“It is not advisable to teach your child to fight back at a bully. On the other hand, martial arts training in its essence serves to bring out other valuable qualities other than brute force or vengeance. They teach self-restraint, self-discipline and confidence in your own physical potentials-all are important signals to the bully that you are not an easy prey.” -SUSAN MURPHY MILANO'S JOURNAL
