What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo developed from humble beginnings over 2,000 years ago and has since spread internationally to become one of the world's most successful and popular martial arts. Its practitioners enjoy physical and mental discipline, as well as excellent fitness and the ability to defend themselves if necessary. Taekwondo is not only a combat sport, but is also a way of life for enthusiasts around the globe.

Adult Martial Arts - Taekwondo

For the adult practitioner, Taekwondo offers a vehicle to learn martial arts and self defense that is both physically engaging and will limit a lot of wear and tear on already aged joints. The biggest reason to do it is that Taekwondo is a legitimate form of self defense and it one fitness activity that will be fun enough on a regular basis to stick to. From the mouth of Master Ruiter, "The hardest thing for an adult to do is to put their own health and wellness over the other loved one in their life. Getting them to start is always the hardest part. The reality is, if they don't help themselves first, they won't be healthy enough to help those that need them when the need them most."

The word Taekwondo itself is made up of three Korean words: Tae, meaning to kick or jump; Kwon, meaning fist or hand; and Do, which means "the way." Loosely (if not literally), it can be thought of as "The Way of the Hand and Foot."

Adult Brazilian Jiu Jutsu

For adults, there are not many activities or martial arts that offer the comradery and physical challenge of Brazilian jiu jitsu. As an adult there a lot less spastic and explosive movement involved which limit injuries and muscle strains. BJJ is a great form of martial arts and self defense by itself as 99% of altercations end up on the ground. The martial art emphasizes controlling your opponent and making them submit if necessary. Combined with Taekwondo classes as part of our high performance package makes a formidable opponent mastering both the longer and shorter ranges of confrontation.

Here are some benefits you can expect from training in Taekwondo

FITNESS

The principals of Taekwondo techniques are based on the design of your body. For power you develop the larger, powerful muscles of the torso. The speed of the techniques comes from the fast, agile muscles of the arms and legs. As you progress in Taekwondo you will learn to coordinate this speed and power, and develop a concentration to focus all of your body's strength into a small, hard striking surface like the edge of the hand or the heel of the foot.

SELF-DEFENSE

When the speed and power developed through Taekwondo is used in a self-defense situation against the soft vulnerable parts of an attacker's body, the result can be incredible. Taekwondo allows a woman to emphasize many of her natural physicals strengths, such as power in the legs while learning a method of self-defense efficient against a much larger opponent. Knowing you can defend yourself, your confidence will grow. And confidence alone is usually enough to deter potential attackers.

SELF-CONFIDENCE

This does not come naturally for many people, but self-confidence can be developed over a period of time. Through Taekwondo, as you accomplish new goals, your confidence level increases. Taekwondo instills a sense of discipline and self-confidence that can carry over to all aspects of your life.
