What Age Should My Child Start Taekwondo?
One of the most common questions we hear from Burnaby parents is: "Is my child too young (or too old) to start Taekwondo?" The good news is that Taekwondo is one of the most flexible martial arts when it comes to age — most kids can start as early as 4 years old, and there's no upper age limit for beginning.
Ages 4-7: Building the Foundation
At Metro Performance Taekwondo Studio, our Lil' Ninjas program is designed specifically for this age group. Classes focus on listening skills, coordination, and basic movement through games and structured play rather than formal technique. The goal at this stage isn't perfecting kicks — it's building focus and confidence in a fun, low-pressure environment.
Ages 8-13: Developing Discipline
By this age, kids are ready for more structured training. Our Junior Taekwondo program introduces traditional forms, sparring basics, and a clearer belt progression system. Many parents tell us this is when they start seeing real changes in their child's confidence both on and off the mat.
Teens and Adults: It's Never Too Late
Taekwondo isn't just for kids. Teens and adults often start training for fitness, stress relief, or self-defense — and the structured belt system gives newcomers a clear sense of progress no matter their age.
The Bottom Line
There's no "perfect age" to start — only the right program for where your child is right now. If you're curious whether Taekwondo is a good fit for your family, we'd love to have you try a free class and see for yourself.
